I wanted to take a moment to discuss the design process for my very first shirt production: Modern Science. This design follows many sources for inspiration and was actually a different color scheme than the apparel that got printed. I knew I wanted to make something weird and cool with the colors royal blue, orange, and black. Together they create a very different sense of feeling when used in any composition. By taking a warm color, contrasted completely with a cool color, and with the addition of black, I knew that this would create something special.
Most of my design process includes making sketches beforehand and performing an image trace in Adobe Illustrator. After that, I colored in certain elements and laid out a rectangle/square box arrangement. Even though I knew where I wanted to position everything, it was a very pleasant surprise to see how well everything came together. I’m not even sure what kind of atmosphere this composition gives off to viewers. To me, it reminds me of old VHS box art, modern art, plant life, and 90’s biology textbooks. With that in mind, the name modern science was born.
I’m still very proud of this design. I’m also very fortunate to be able to sell it on shirts through Total Drag and Last Stop CD Shop. I did some color changes to the second variation, yet it still remains just as classic. Hopefully, in the near future, I’ll be able to produce more apparel designs just like it!
